Dear Daughter of Almighty God

Ephesians 6:16 (ESV)

16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one;

Historical background

The Roman shield was made from bonded wood strips and covered with leather.  The shield was not flat but semicircular so that any missiles thrown at the soldier would be deflected to one side.  Iron or brass rims fitted along the edges of the shield, and a leather strap fastened to the back.  The shield had a metal projection in the centre which was used to stun or wind an opponent, easing the soldier’s subsequent strike with his sword.  The shield was both a defensive tool and an offensive weapon.

Biblical parallels

Each of us will face difficult situations and temptations of the enemy; the shield of faith is the protection God has provided to get us through these times.

The Roman shield was also big enough for a person to hide behind for complete protection. When in a group the front soldiers held the shield in front the back soldiers held the shield above the heads so it was very difficult for any arrow to penetrate, which is why we need each other. When that shield feels like it is getting heavy it is big enough to stand on the floor and still protect you.

So keep standing in faith.
