Dear Daughter of Almighty God

Ephesians 6:14 (ESV)

14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,

Historical background

The breastplate was a soldier’s protection for his chest and abdominal area.  Crafted of metal bands, the breastplate was sometimes called “chainmail” and it afforded critical protection from powerful blows.

Before battle, a soldier would fasten the breastplate around his chest like a vest to protect his vital organs.  If a soldier failed to wear his breastplate, an arrow could easily pierce his heart or lungs.

Biblical parallels

Every Christian has a vital “spiritual organ” which needs to be guarded above all else, the spiritual heart.

Putting on the armour of God involves guarding our hearts with the breastplate of righteousness.  We know that it is not our own goodness that protects our hearts, it is Jesus’ goodness.

It is through Jesus that we are righteous. Righteous means virtuous, moral, good, just, blameless, upright, honourable and honest. Jesus was all these and because we have received him as our Lord then we are all Jesus is. Protect your heart put on the breastplate of righteousness that Jesus has provided for you.

Jesus is our righteousness.
